Qantas Cancels Direct Flights to London Heathrow Due to Middle East Tensions

In response to escalating tensions between Israel and Iran, Qantas Airways has announced the cancellation of its direct flights between Perth (PER/YPPH) and London Heathrow Airport (LHR/EGLL). This decision comes as the airline faces challenges in ensuring the safety of its routes amid geopolitical uncertainties.

The direct flights, operated under flight number QF9 from Melbourne to London via Perth, have been suspended for at least the next three (03) days, along with the return flights under QF10. The affected routes typically utilize Boeing B787-9 aircraft for the nearly 18-hour journey between Perth and London.

The primary concern driving this decision is the inability to safely navigate Iranian airspace while maintaining sufficient fuel reserves to complete the journey to London. Depending on the flight paths, these routes sometimes traverse areas north of Iranian airspace or over Iraq, both of which present heightened risks amid current tensions in the region.

As an alternative, Qantas has introduced a new flight option, QF209, which includes a four-hour stopover in Singapore (SIN/WSSS) for refueling before continuing to London. While this adds to the overall travel time, the airline prioritizes passenger safety and operational feasibility in its decision-making process.

Passengers booked on affected flights are advised to check with Qantas for updates and alternative arrangements. The airline assures its commitment to providing safe and reliable travel options amidst evolving geopolitical dynamics.
